PRACTICAL PREVENTION

Start with the everyday details.

Leicestershire Police recommends secure storage, sound boundaries and regular checks of security equipment. These measures work together.

Machinery & tools

Secure equipment when it is not in use, control access to keys and keep photographs, serial numbers and an inventory of valuable items.

Discuss camera coverage

Fuel & storage areas

Restrict access to tanks and storage areas. Check them regularly and consider visibility, lighting and camera coverage.

Explore remote camera options

Outbuildings & tack rooms

Check doors, windows and locks. Consider an alarm and inspect security equipment regularly to make sure it works.

Explore intruder alarms

Entrances & boundaries

Maintain fences and gates, secure gate hinges and review unused access points. Consider cameras over vulnerable areas.

LAYERS OF PROTECTION

More than cameras alone.

NFU Mutual’s guidance brings together electronic measures, physical safeguards and community action. A useful security plan considers all three.

01 / ELECTRONIC

See, detect and trace

Consider CCTV, alarms and lighting alongside vehicle trackers and immobilisers. Protect GPS equipment with available PIN settings and appropriate marking.

Discuss cameras for your site
02 / PHYSICAL

Secure access and equipment

Lock gates, remove vehicle keys and secure valuable machinery and removable equipment. Keep photographs and identifying numbers to help establish ownership if items are stolen.

03 / COMMUNITY

Share concerns and report

Take part in local rural watch schemes and report crimes and suspicious activity to police. Use established local groups to share relevant information.

BEYOND THE FINANCIAL LOSS

A theft affects more
than the balance sheet.

The report describes disruption to work, stress and a loss of confidence in the safety of home and business. It encourages people to speak with neighbours, rural watch groups and farming support organisations.
